In October of 2001, Glen D. Gilmore was dubbed the “anthrax mayor” and a “national hero” by the New York Times, for his “quick response” to America’s anthrax crisis when it was discovered that all four anthrax-laden letters, which killed five people, were found to have passed through the regional postal facility, in Hamilton, New Jersey, where he was mayor at the time. Gilmore, who served both as mayor and public safety director of the community, garnered worldwide attention for his leadership during this crisis when he organized a treatment clinic for over a thousand people, when state and federal officials failed to do so.
Appearing on Good Morning America, BBC, CNN, Fox News, and many other major media outlets, Mayor Gilmore was featured in Time magazine where he was described as “a man of action” for his leadership. More recently, his actions were featured in the newly-published book, Who's In Charge?: Leadership during Epidemics, Bioterror Attacks, and Other Public Health Crises.
Called “a high-energy suburban mayor” by the Washington Post, Gilmore completed two four-year terms as mayor of Hamilton, during which time his community was recognized by CNN as being the “10th Safest City in America,” and by Money magazine as one of the”Best Places to Live” in America. Gilmore also served as Vice Chair of the New Jersey League of Municipalities (NJLM) Hometown Security Task Force, Chairman of the NJLM Economic Development Task Force, and as a member of the Board of Director for the NJ Conference of Mayors.
An adjunct with the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center at Texas A&M University, Mayor Gilmore assists in the development and delivery of executive-level crisis leadership training funded by the US Department of Homeland Security. He also completed an executive program in Crisis Leadership at the JFK School of Government at Harvard.
