Joanne Cox

Joanne Cox is the Deputy Chief of the Emergency Risk Communication Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Soon after being assigned to the Emergency Communication System at CDC, she worked on CDC's emergency response for the H1N1 Influenza Pandemic from April 2009 to April 2010 as a Co-Lead in CDC's Joint Information Center. Prior to joining the branch, she served as Acting Associate Director for Communication Science for the National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases from 2007 to 2009. In that role, she provided risk communication expertise on 19 separate foodborne and infectious disease outbreaks--including Salmonella Typhimurium in the municipal water supply in Alamosa, Colorado; Salmonella St. Paul in peppers and peanut containing products; E. coli 0157 in ground beef and pizza products; and Botulism in chili sauce. Before joining CDC in 1998, Ms. Cox worked in the television and radio broadcasting industry for 22 years. She served on the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Southern Regional Chapter) from 1988-2000. At CDC, she has served in various roles as a Health Communications Specialist in the areas of enviornmental health, infectious diseases, legislative research, partnership development, web content, and emergency communications.
